My childhood was spent like most young boys. Living in a region with many lakes, I would spend warmer days driving toy trucks and construction equipment along the sandy edge of my grandparents’ lake. As a preschooler, my grandfather would take me to construction sites and we would watch the construction. The power to shape a landscape has always captured my imagination.
The video games I played introduced me to the landscapes that computers could create. Early on, I spent hours trying to conquer games in many exotic places. I began drawing these landscapes and the characters very early in my life. My parents often took me outdoors. My mother was a naturalist and was always looking at frogs, birds and bugs. I had several close encounters with real, but odd looking animals during my vacations and weekend hikes. My dad always photographed the outings with an artist eye. I learned early that nature is rich with science fiction images, stories and forms. The swamps, bogs and forests that I explored during my childhood instilled memories that I still draw inspiration from today. I remember the way that light filters into a forest or hits dewy the wings of a resting dragonfly.
I attended a high school where art was revered. One teacher was also a strong proponent of art. She designed and taught several art classes along with colleague. The academic emphasize on art gave me an exposure to the world of art. Students at high school regularly participated in competitions and art shows. Successful students were also introduced to the local, but nationally recognized college – the College for Creative Studies. I knew when I was a high school sophomore that this was the college that I wanted to attend.
My dream of attending the College for Creative Studies was fulfilled when I was accepted during my senior year. In college, I was introduced to one of the most inspirational instructors I have ever met. This professor lived in Northern Michigan, a regional of incredible beauty. I learned how to render portraits and people from him. There were several other exceptional instructors at the college who have influenced my work. Surrounded by passionate students with varied interests, I concentrated on illustration with a focus on digital art. I received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Illustration.
I have been fascinated by the capacity of the computer to create scenes without any limitations. The potential of computer graphics are without bounds. Scenes can dramatize yet now touch the human spirit. Computer generated images have moved beyond the backgrounds and characters into the realm of fine art that has the power to endure.
I am an artist who enjoys working on digital painting and computer graphics. I have worked on drawings for book covers along with other design projects. I am interested in working in the film/ gaming industry or pursuing illustrations for book, concepts, storylines or other projects. I am flexible and open other art projects. I am able to use my skills in composition and my knowledge of color with my strong technique and eye for detail to solve creative problems.
